Health Services

Nurses are assigned to each elementary school for at least one-half day per week. Nurses are on call for emergencies when they are out of the building.

Parents are responsible for informing the school of existing medical problems. Student’s medical concerns should be listed on the enrollment/emergency form.

PLEASE notify the Nurse or Office – with any changes in addresses, phone or emergency contacts, if a physician diagnoses a communicable disease or your child has a change in health status or a chronic illness is diagnosed or if your child will be absent (please be specific and give the physician diagnosis or 2 symptoms keeping them home if absence is due to illness).

Basic Criteria for Temporary School Exclusion Due to Illness

There will be times when your child will experience illness. Symptoms including vomiting, difficulty breathing, diarrhea, behavior change and/or irritability would all be signs that your child may need to stay home from school. Your child may experience one or more of these symptoms with or without a fever. If your child does have a fever of greater than 100 degrees, it is recommended that he/she stays home until fever free for 24 hours without the use of a fever-reducing medication.

Health Screenings

Health screenings are sponsored by the school district. These screenings may include vision, dental, hearing, height, weight, and BMI measurements. Students will also be screened for head lice.

Immunizations

Prior to starting school or when transferring into the school district, students must present an approved Iowa Department of Public Health immunization certificate signed by a health care provider stating that the student has received the immunizations required by law. Students without the proper certificate are not allowed to attend school until they receive the immunizations or the student makes arrangements with the principal. Only for specific medical or religious purposes are students exempted from the immunization requirements.

Injury or Illness at School

Students who become ill or are injured at school are given first aid. In the case of a serious illness or injury, the school shall attempt to notify parents according to the information on the enrollment/emergency form. If the student is too ill to remain in school, the student will be released to the student’s parents or, with parental permission according to the enrollment/emergency form, to another person directed by the parents.

In cases of emergency, the school will contact emergency personnel, if necessary, and attempt to notify the parents where the student has been transported for treatment. The school assumes no responsibility for medical treatment of students.
